About Me

My name is Aleanna Siacon and I am an undergraduate student at Wayne State University, a premier research college within the city of Detroit. I hope to graduate in 2019 with a Bachelor's of Arts in both Journalism and Political Science, as well as a minor in International Studies. Being in WSU's Irvin D. Reid Honors College means that I will be graduating with honors as well.

Ultimately, I hope that my studies will facilitate a career as an investigative reporter or a political correspondent. In an effort to achieve my goals, I am actively involved in a number of campus organizations for the supplemental purpose of shaping and expanding upon my skillset.

For example, I am a member of WSU's Journalism Institute for Media Diversity (JIM) a competitive honors learning program designed to mold motivated students into effective and professional journalists. It is through my involvement in the institute that I have come to know like-minded peers who have served as my mentors. The members of JIM have provided me with great support and an expansive network.

Also, I am an active staff writer and photographer for WSU's student publication called The South End (TSE) I have been able to produce and publish a variety of media thus far, including: news, features, arts & entertainment, and galleries. Taking the photos for my own articles is a point of pride of mine, and many of my photographs have been featured as the headlining shots for stories written by other reporters on TSE's staff. Every article I work on is an opportunity to improve and learn. I believe that there is value and beauty in documenting and sharing stories. Working with TSE has given me the priviledge of seeking out the stories that surround me at my University and a platform with the power to trigger necessary discussion.

I love what I do and I do what I love. I am fortunate to say that I am invested in an education that fuels my passions and I go to school excited to improve. For me, the beauty I see in journalism stems from an innate desire to remind people of their sheer 'human-ness' by recording the good, the bad, the strange, the unjust, and everything in between.
